Shelby Jane (Smith) Payne

Shelby Jane Smith Payne, a resident of Mobile, Alabama, passed away peacefully at home on April 5, 2024. She was 84 years old.

Shelby was a devoted wife and mother and was the foundation of our family. She loved her family with all her heart and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved to cook everyone’s favorite meals.

Shelby spent 65 years with the love of her life and soulmate Phil and guided them through the many passions and difficulties of their lives. Shelby is preceded in death by her parents, Franklin James Smith and Bessie Leola Underwood Smith; her sister Anne Smith Kitchens Payne, two brothers Billy Elton Smith and Ray Quinton Smith.

Those left to cherish her memory include her beloved husband of 64 years Phillip Stanley Payne, two sons Phillip Stanley Payne, Jr. (Analisa) and Michael Reese Payne (DeeAnn), one sister Betty Jean Smith Landers, six grandchildren Christina Payne, Tiffany Hope (Brandon), Cody Payne, Michael Payne, II, Shelby Richardson (Hunter) and Taylor Hancock (Brian), nine great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved deeply.

A celebration of Shelby’s life will be held at a later date.
