Charles Henry Calhoun

Charles Henry Calhoun, a resident of Irvington, Alabama, passed away on April 30, 2023. He was 76 years old. Charles was a devout Christian and attended Wilson Avenue Baptist Church in Semmes, Alabama. He married Sylvia Jean Cauthen on June 1, 1973. They were happily married for 49 years.

Charles attended Murphy High School in Mobile, Alabama where he graduated in 1964. While attending high school, he worked at his father's barber shop (Calhoun's Barber Shop) in Chickasaw, Alabama until 1967. After that, he joined the Army in December of 1967. During his years of service, he received the following medals: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

Charles received his Bachelor of Science in Education in December of 2000 from Athens State University. He taught Computer Science and Printing at Bishop State Community College for 22 years. Prior jobs included Royal Typewriter Company and International Paper Company.

Throughout his life, Charles enjoyed many things. He loved fishing with the family, working on antique cars, repairing computers and filing income taxes for family and friends. He was an avid Alabama football fan. Charles loved spending time with his family on holidays and special occasions. He was always there to help the family and anyone that had a special need.

Charles was preceded in death by his father, James Henry Calhoun; mother, Myrtle Lee Calhoun; brothers, Richard Wayne Calhoun, Phillip David Calhoun, and James Jerry Calhoun; and his sister, Alice Faye Collum.

Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife, Sylvia Jean Calhoun; brother-in-law, Loyd Collum; sister-in-law, Joyce McElroy; brother-in-law, Bill McElroy; nephews and nieces, Neal Pepper, Becky Pepper, Felicity Tanner, Janice Pellitier, Holly True, Kelly (Scott) Opiela, Letisha Calhoun, Jeannie Calhoun, and Jamie Calhoun; grand nieces and nephews, Micah Pepper, Michael, Amber, Adam, and Ashley Pellitier, Holden, Kelsey, and Jamesy McInerney, Cameron and Kendall Opiela, Joseph Zane Miller, Madelynn Danielle Calhoun, Gregory Cheng, and Ava Adains; and many other relatives and friends.

Graveside service will be held at 10:00am, Thursday, May 11, 2023, at Mobile Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
