Deborah Waithe-Smith was born on the Island of Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean on June 8, 1960 (registered birthday on June 10, 1960). She went to be with our Lord on October 15, 2022 at the age of 62 in Mobile, Alabama.
Deborah “Debbie” Waithe was the daughter of the late Phyllis Marie Waithe & Rafael Aldofo Waithe. She came to America for a new life in the mid 70’s, first arriving in Brooklyn, New York than later relocated to Yonkers, New York. Through the union of the Lord, she wedded again to Charles A. Taylor.
She overcame many obstacles and difficulties on her journey in life. Through her career, Deborah did lots of political work and worked at home as a Home Health Aide. She provided so much support to many families and patients in Yonkers, New York.
She worked campaigns in support of many local politicians in the city of Yonkers. Deborah served as an Executive Board Member for Working Family Party, Union DC 1707 & Local 389 NY. She worked hard and stood for what was in her heart, and as a result she successfully helped getting the minimum wage for healthcare workers increased in the state of New York. She retired in 2003 due to disability.
In 2019, Deborah relocated to Mobile, Alabama to reside with her daughter and grandchildren. She was loved by everyone who knew her. She was the sweetest, most caring, funniest person you could ever meet. She always lit up the room with her one of a kind, tell it like it is personality. She lived out the remainder of her life in Mobile, Alabama, until she departed to heaven.
Deborah is preceded in death by her parents, Rafael & Phyllis Waithe; sisters, Janet Norton, Jennifer McKenzie, and Gail Yarde; brothers, Eric and Gerald Waithe; grandson, Isaiah Smith; and husband, Charles A. Taylor.
She leaves behind her children, Maurice J. Smith and Chenease Smith-Coleman; beloved son-in-law, Maurice D. Coleman; grandchildren, Anthony Smith, Diamond and Clay’von Snead, and Kimaura Perry-Coleman; and her sisters, Paula Bryan, Heidi Waithe, and Marion Williams. Deborah always leaves behind sweet memories with a host of family and friends.
