John Dee Cowan, a resident of Theodore, Alabama, passed away at age 76 on Friday, January 27, 2023. He was a veteran of the United States Army where he served honorably for 3 years primarily stationed in Germany. After the Army, John settled down in the Virginia Beach area. He successfully owned and operated restaurants, a home improvement business, and lastly Custom Countertops of Virginia. John sold his countertop business after he successfully completed treatment for cancer and retired to Theodore where he remained cancer free.
John enjoyed hunting, fishing, finding Indian relics, horse racing, beekeeping, planting fruit trees, cooking, and vodka of which he referred to as “potato juice”. He also enjoyed his friendly football wagers with his friend Jake and working with his friend Steve Tan at Happy Home Builders.
John is preceded in death by his mother, Deloris Phelps Cowan; father, Marshall Lee Cowan; sister, Lisa Smith; and granddaughter, Mikaela Marie Lambert.
Those left to cherish his memory include his sons, John David Cowan and Jon Donovan Cowan; grandson, Brandon Cowan; granddaughters, Hali Cowan and Lindsey Cowan; brothers, Donald Cowan, Robert Cowan, Bill Cowan, and Michael Shoemaker; and several nieces and nephews.
