Katherine Frederick Frey of Theodore, AL, passed away on the 4th of July. She was the daughter of Leo Kirk Frederick and Saranell Mixon Frederick of Monroeville, AL. her brother Kirk predeceased her, and she is survived by two sisters: Virginia Morgan (Ray) and Nelda Griffith (Steve). She is also survived by three loving nephews: Tommy Griffith, Jimmy Frederick, and Brian Frederick; and niece Allison Blanks.
Katherine (Kathy) earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from University of Alabama – Birmingham, a masters degree from University of South Alabama (USA), and a post-masters in Advanced Family Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing from USA. From 1977-1987 Kathy was a staff nurse at USA. During this time she was selected as an Outstanding Young Woman in America in recognition of her outstanding ability, accomplishments, and service to the community. In 1987 she was appointed Clinical Assistant Professor at USA. Kathy was a dedicated nurse educator. She taught at all levels of the nursing curriculum including mentoring new faculty, assisting with faculty workshops, developing courses on theory and clinical nursing, and serving on numerous committees developing curriculum and bylaws. Also during those years she used her talents as a Red Cross volunteer nurse and led her students in doing volunteer work at Little Sisters of the Poor. Kathy selflessly devoted time and energy to help women struggling with alcoholism. She brought light into the lives of countless individuals, sharing her experience, strength, and hope. After receiving her post-masters in psychiatric and mental health, she worked for Mobile Mental Health. Before retiring, Kathy helped set up the nursing curriculum at Springhill College. An important focus of Kathy’s life was service to the Lord, her church, and community. She served in numerous capacities at New Hope UMC. She taught Sunday School, served as secretary of United Methodist Women, helped with Vacation Bible School, served on a mission trip to Ecuador, and started a cancer support group.
The family will have a Celebration of Life at New Hope UMC on Saturday, July 15, 2023. Visitation will be at 1:00 PM and service at 2:00 PM. A reception will follow the service. The family requests no flowers, but donations be made to one of these United Methodist missions: Embrace Alabama’s Kids; United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR); or United Methodist Women’s missions.
