Kathryn Alida Harrison Driskell (“Kaki”), a native and lifelong resident of Mobile, Alabama, passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 in the loving arms of family, after a brief illness. She was 71 years old.
Kathy graduated from Bishop Toolen High School in 1969 and attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. She met the love of her life, Murray Driskell, at the age of 14. They celebrated 52 years of marriage and have two daughters, Candice Leigh Driskell McLaughlin (John) and Shannon Kathryn Driskell Vogler (Kevin). Kathy was a friend, confidante, and advisor to her siblings. She loved being a homemaker and a mother and cherished her four
grandchildren, who gave her the nickname “Kaki”. She recently welcomed her first great-grandbaby. Kathy was an avid tennis player and competed on the Skyline Country Club team for many years. She enjoyed reading and had a long list of books by favorite authors, from the classics to contemporary novels. She cared deeply for tradition, had an excellent memory of people, places and events, was a keeper of family heirlooms and a gracious holiday hostess. She never forgot to send a birthday card or mark a special occasion. Her homemade banana bread was a favorite at Sisters’ Weekends at Orange Beach and Dauphin Island, where she managed to beat everyone at Mexican Train despite claiming not to know how to play the game.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Spencer Turner Harrison, Jr. and Shirley Kathryn Long Harrison.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Murray Loman Driskell, Jr.; her daughters, Candice Leigh Driskell McLaughlin (John) and Shannon Kathryn Driskell Vogler (Kevin); her grandchildren, John Murray McLaughlin (Carley), Turner Williams McLaughlin, Marion Leigh McLaughlin and Gwyneth Kathryn Vogler; her new great-granddaughter, Lila Bell McLaughlin; her sisters, Barbara Harrison Teare (Ron), Janet Harrison Loftin (Mark), and her
honorary sister Joan Wittendorfer Harrison; her brother Spencer Turner Harrison III (Joan); her sisters-in-law Ann Driskell Hart and Bobbie Driskell Shell; her nephew Joe Prati IV (Dianne), who was loved and included in the family like her third child; and numerous other beloved nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank her care team from Saad In-Home Hospice and Saad Retreat. In lieu of flowers, donations to Kathy’s favorite charity, St. Jude Hospital, will be appreciated.
