Melvin Coker, Sr. Obituary

Melvin “Whiskers” Earl Coker, Sr., age 70, a native and lifelong resident of Washington County, Alabama, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 5, 2024.

Born on August 13, 1954, Melvin was a free-spirited soul with a heart as big as the open road. A Millwright by trade and an Owner/Operator Truck Driver by passion, his gypsy spirit led him to every corner of the country. Whether behind the wheel of a big rig or sharing stories with friends, he embodied the true essence of a traveler, never staying in one place too long but leaving a lasting impact wherever he went.

A man of grit and determination, Melvin also had a soft spot for his family, who were the anchors to his wandering soul. Despite his adventurous nature, his heart always brought him back to St. Stephens, Alabama, where he found peace and love among those who cherished him.

He was preceded in death by his precious great grandbaby, Novy Townsend; his parents, Joyce and Earl Coker; his brother, Kelvin Coker; and his nephews, Nick Coker, Timothy Coker, and Trenton Coker.

Melvin is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Cynthia “Shelley” Tharp Coker; his children, Melvin “Van” (April) Coker, Jr., Christian “Christi” (Tim) Nichols, and William Harley (Michaela) Coker; his grandchildren, SaVannah Coker, Rachel (Darren) Townsend, Charity (Wayne) Havard, Timothy (Laci) Nichols, William (Julianna) Nichols, and Carrlei Nichols; and his great-grandchildren, Emma Havard, Fynnleigh Havard, Timberlyn Nichols, Stetson Nichols, and Julianne Townsend.

He is also survived by his siblings, Marilyn (Wayne) Pugh, Velma Smith, Kim (Duffy) Tarver, Tim Coker, and Debra “Sam” Coker; along with numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and countless friends who will forever carry his stories in their hearts.

Melvin’s life was a testament to living boldly, loving fiercely, and embracing the journey. As he rides into his final sunset, his legacy of wanderlust and love will remain with all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at 3 pm from Victory Grove Church in Wagarville, AL.
