Nicholas Christodoulos Coumanis passed away peacefully at Saad’s Hospice Retreat after battling Lewy Body Dementia. He was 84 years old. Nick or “Big Nick”, a native of Patmos, Greece, Village of Skala, arrived in Mobile, Alabama at the age of 18 and resided in Mobile his entire life. Upon arrival, Nick immediately went to work in the Coumanis family restaurant, the Princess House, in 1956. Thereafter, he worked and operated numerous Mobile restaurants (Tiny Diny, Constantine’s, Tommy’s Terminal) until he became Director of Food Services for Mobile County Metro Jail in 1991 until his retirement in 2009.

Prior to departing Patmos, he completed The Patmian Theological School where he was trained to be a psalti/chanter. Upon arrival in Mobile, Nick immediately began to serve his church, the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Mobile, AL as a psalti/chanter. He served his church for 65 years as a psalti and also served in numerous other leadership roles in his church. Additionally, he was a lifelong member of the Order of AHEPA.

It was through his service to the church that he met his bride-to-be, Kathryn Calogrides; they were married February 12, 1961. Surviving Nick are his wife of 61 years, Kathryn; their two children, Christ Nicholas Coumanis (Melissa Lawrence) and Tonie Ann Coumanis Torrans; four grandchildren, Jerry Edward Torrans III, Anastasia Kathryn Coumanis, Nicholas Anthony Torrans, and Nicholas Christ Coumanis; as well as numerous cousins and friends.
