Reverand J. Francis Sofie, Jr., age 60, died on Saturday June 22, 2024 in Mobile, AL He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Carolyn Sofie. He is survived by three sisters; Cecilia (Tom) Sofie-Wyatt, Patti (Angelo) Eleftheriou and Kathy (Roger) Krebs; three nephews: John Rogers (Samantha) Krebs, Richard (Elizabeth) Krebs and Stephen Eleftheriou; many other relatives and friends.
Before his ordination, he graduated from the University of Alabama where he received a BA in Religious Studies and a double minor in Philosophy and History. He attended St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome for the beginning of his theological education and earned his Master of Divinity from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Phillidelphia, with a Master of Arts in Systematic Theology. He was ordained to the sacred priesthood on June 10, 1994, at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Mobile.
Father Sofie served as a priest of the Archdiocese of Mobile for 30 years. His assignments were: parochial vicar at St. Ignatius Parish (Mobile); campus minister at St. Michael the Archangel Parish (Auburn); pastor at Holy Redeemer Parish (Eufala); Pastor at St. Michael Parish (Auburn); pastor at St. Vincent de Paul Parish (Mobile); chaplian at McGill-Toolen Catholic High School (Mobile); pastor at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish (Mobile); pastor at St. Peter Parish (Montgomery) and pastor at St. Robert Bellarmine Parish (Atmore).
In May of 2021, a longtime dream of Father Sofie's was realized when he was received into the Priestly Fraternity of St. Dominic becoming a "Diocesen Dominican" and a son of Dominic. He received the religious name of Vincent, from St. Vincent Ferrer, a renowned Dominican preacher and miracle worker.
Please pray for the repose of the soul of Father Sofie and for the consolation of his family.
A Prayer Service will be on Wednesday evening June 25, 2024 from 5:30pm to 6:00pm at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Visitation will be on Thursday morning June 27, 2024 from 9:00am to 11:00am. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00am at Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, Burial will be in The Catholic Cemetery.
