Valerie Louise (Boyce) Bryan

Valerie Louise (Boyce) Bryan, 52, of Mobile Alabama, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 17, 2023 after an illness she had been struggling with for a long time.

Valerie was born on August 20, 1970 to Louis Boyce and the late Donna Whitmore Boyce in Wheeling, WV. After Valerie graduated from Olney Friends School in 1988, she went on to study Social Work at the University of Kentucky.

Valerie graduated with a Bachelors of Social Work in1993 and a Masters of Social Work in 1998 from the University of Kentucky. She went on to get her Ph.D. in Social Work in 2005 from Kentucky as well.

After working as Adjunct Faculty at the University of Kentucky, Valerie went on to become an Assistant Professor of Social Work at the University of South Alabama where she worked her way up to Associate Professor of Social Work. During that time Valerie published several peerreviewed articles and co-authored three books, some that are still being taught in Social Work classes today.

Valerie liked to spend her free time coming up with unique recipes and impressing her friends and family with her culinary expertise.

Valerie is survived by her husband of over 26 years, Steve Bryan, her father Louis Boyce of Wheeling WV, her sisters Marcie (Justin) Fortun of Pittsburg PA, Melanie Boyce of Wheeling WV, and Leslie (Timothy) O’Grady, and brother Bob Caldwell (Judy Jobb) both of Shadyside OH.

Memorial services will be held at a time and place to be determined later.
